Cook's ships appeared at the beaches of Gulf Karakakoa at the holiday in honor of one of the Polynesian gods. Natives, and especially the priests treated the Mariners with great reverence, as they were taken for the divine messengers. Two weeks later, Cook's ships sailed on, but soon they had to return because of the broken mast during a storm. People did not know that the holiday was over and the swimming in the sacred bay and stepping on its beaches was prohibited. In the course of the conflict Captain Cook and his five sailors were killed. Later, the remains of brave travelers were handed the captain Klerk, who took command of the expedition. These remains of the sailors were buried at sea Feb. 21, 1779. In 1898, the Hawaiian Islands were annexed to the U.S. as a colony, and in 1959 Hawaii joined the United States and since then it became the youngest, the 50th state. On Dec. 7, 1941 Japan went to war in the Pacific attacking the American naval base in Hawaii. Unexpected massive Japanese air raid led to the fact that for just a few hours almost the entire American fleet in the Pacific ceased to exist, and Japanese won supremacy on the water on the first day. For one day a small island lost about 4 thousand people. |
